Happy last day of May.
From time to time, I'll add some comments on this page. I hope you check back and we can visit "Across the Fence."
I've been updating this web page to reflect the new postal rates. I ship books ordered on my website by media/book rate in a padded envelope for protection. The old rate was $3.00. The envelope costs $1.39. The old rate was $1.59. The new postal rates hiked that up to $2.13. That now comes to $3.52. I decided to keep an even rate and make the new shipping rate $3.50. That's why you see an increase in the shipment of books.

Don't take your music to the grave with you. Every time I give a talk on family history or writing, I use that statement. Have you ever said, "If only I had asked more questions before (insert name) died." After they're gone, the stories and information are lost forever... the music dies. It's so important to gather that history before it's too late. I've interviewed many relatives about their memories. Now, if I could have just one hour with each of my grandparents. I have so many questions for them. None of them left any written record of their life. You also have wonderful stories to tell. Start recording them today. Your personal history is important.

I'm looking forward to visiting the Old Times Assisted Living in Westby. I'll read some stories and then I want to listen to the memories of the residents as they relate things they thought of while listening to the stories. I hope to set up the same type of visit with other assisted living facilities. If you have one in your area that you'd like me to visit, let me know.

Several people have asked if I plan to do another book with more of the weekly columns. That was pretty much contingent on how many people wanted this book. Based on the sales after a little over two months, I think it's a safe bet that there will be an Across the Fence - Book Two. The second book will contain some new stories you haven't read in the column. There are some longer stories that couldn't be run in the space allowed in the newspapers, and a couple of stories that some newspapers may have been reluctant to run. My plan at this point is to have the second book printed by late next summer or early fall. Stay tuned!

December 20, 2006
My story "Christmas - 1966" was selected as the 1st place winner in The Country Today Christmas memories contest and was printed in the December 20th edition of the paper. The next day I received a call from a woman in Mazomanie, Wisconsin, who's brother had been killed in Vietnam on the same day I talk about in the story. We'll be getting together and I plan to do a follow-up story on her brother.
