ACROSS
THE FENCE

"Across the Fence" is a weekly column by Howard Sherpe, who lives in Madison, Wisconsin. He writes about his experiences growing up on a dairy and tobacco farm near Westby, Wisconsin; the sights, sounds, and smells of nature; everyday life - past, present, and future; service related issues, and his Vietnam experience as an Army medic. Hopefully his stories will stir your memories, incite your curiosity to explore the world around you, and examine the issues facing the world today.

Sherpe is a storyteller of a country life that has all but disappeared. Walk with him down a country lane filled with memories of an earlier time.
–Jerry Apps, author of Every Farm Tells a Story

Howard Sherpe is our good neighbor across the fence, a Wisconsin (Norwegian) country boy at heart, with stories to tell about everything from Milking Cows on Cold Winter Nights to Outhouses, Old Barns, Vietnam, and much moreÉall skillfully carved in words for our own good and safekeeping. If we listen, we will hear the heart of Wisconsin beating, as well as the heart of one man who knows who he is, where he is, and what matters most.
–Norbert Blei, author of the Door CountyTrilogy

Howard Sherpe's story telling newspaper columns are gathered here, into a strong book that celebrates rural people and their lives. It celebrates others, too, those so-called ordinary people who on closer look, are revealed as not ordinary at all. Howard's quiet interviewing style captures people who are real, brings them alive, and gives them voice. These are voices we all need to hear.
–Ben Logan, author of The Land Remembers

This collection of Howard Sherpe's popular newspaper column is like holding a long, leisurely conversation with a trusted neighbor. Funny, lyrical and wise, Sherpe's writing takes us to a time when life, if not exactly simpler, seemed to make more sense.
–Craig Werner, Professor at the UW-Madison and author of A Change Is Gonna Come: Music, Race & the Soul of America
